Without doubt the best food for babies is mothers milk for
at least the first 12 months, if this is for any reason not possible as with
our children, the next best thing is to try and find a wet nurse or another
mother who has spare milk. If either of these options are not available or
practical, then Free Range Pasture Fed Organic Fresh Unpasteurized Cows or
Goats Milk can be substituted. Unfortunately none of these options were
available to us, luckily we found a baby formula that was very low in sugar had
no soy and was not fortified with artificial vitamins and minerals. This we
mixed with Fresh Homemade Coconut Milk. Most Commercial formulas contain large
amounts of sugars and are fortified with artificial vitamins and minerals in
forms that are difficult for babies to metabolize and often detrimental
especially for babies, so should be avoided if possible.
It very important to insure babies have a Wholesome Organic
Diet (which also includes a nursing Mothers diet as many substances and compounds
will be passed on in mothers milk), as unnatural compounds and substances in
their foods can retard babies and young children's physical and mental
development.
Usually babies are ready to start eating semi-solids when
they can hold their heads up without assistance. It is important to introduce
solid foods to babies slowly just a little at a time and is a good idea to
start introducing foods to them one type at a time and then waiting a few days
between different foods to watch for adverse reactions. It is also necessary to
be careful about potential choking hazards. Once your baby seems interested in
food it is time to start making different foods available. Allowing your baby
to explore and play with food makes them interested in trying it so it is important
to make foods appetizing.
A babies digestive system is not fully developed and they do
not have the enzymes necessary to break down the types carbohydrates found in
grains like rice or wheat, we do not recommend feeding these types of foods to
babies until they have begun to eat full meals and then to use them only
sparingly as all grains especially refined grains are tuned into sugars when
eaten, this can lead to a lifelong craving for simple carbohydrates, obesity
and other health problems.
All nuts, seeds and grains should be soaked as they contain
enzyme inhibitors to stop them sprouting prematurely and as protection from
pests, some of these are also anti- nutrients such as phytates, tannins and
goitrogens which protect them from bacteria and molds. These compounds upset
digestion and the ability of our bodies to metabolize many nutrients as well as
compromising our own enzymes ability to extract nutrients from our other foods.
To counteract these compounds, soaking and rinsing is the best way to dissolve
and remove these compounds as well as making their nutrients more readily
available.
With any new food you give to your baby it is important to
watch for signs of a food allergies: swelling of the tongue, lips, and face;
skin rashes; wheezing; abdominal cramping; vomiting; and diarrhea. Allergy
symptoms can be mild or severe. If your baby seems to be having trouble
breathing, has swelling of the face or lips, or develops severe vomiting or
diarrhea after eating, call your local emergency number immediately or your
Babies Doctor.
We do not own or use a microwave oven. A few years ago there
were government health warnings against heating babies milk including cow’s
milk and formulas but especially expressed mother’s milk in microwave ovens
because the practice of doing so destroyed many of the natural nutrients,
micro-nutrients and enzymes' in the milk.
In Russia for many years microwave ovens were banned because
the government after doing extensive tests on people who had eaten food that
had been exposed or cooked using microwaves found that these people had
increased cholesterol levels. Decreased numbers of leukocytes (white blood
cells), and decreased numbers of red blood cells. There were radiolytic
compounds found in their blood and decreased hemoglobin levels which could
indicate anemia.
Grains and milk microwaved had some of their amino acids
converted into carcinogenic compounds and meats microwaved contained
nitrosodienthanolamines or carcinogenic substances.
Thawing frozen fruits by microwave converted their fractions
into carcinogenic substances glucoside and galactoside. Even extremely short
exposure of raw, cooked or frozen vegetables converted their plant alkaloids
into carcinogens.
Carcinogenic free radicals were formed in microwaved plants,
especially root vegetables.
Structural degradation leading to decreased food value was
found to be 60 to 90 percent overall for all foods tested, with significant
decreases in bioavailability of B complex vitamins, vitamins C and E, essential
minerals and lipotropics (substances that prevent abnormal accumulation of
fat). These facts are supported by a 1998 Japanese study by Watanabe about
microwaving and its effects on vitamin B12 in milk.
A carefully controlled test on people eating microwaved
foods and having their blood checked afterwards in Switzerland showed that
their white blood cell levels had been reduced and their red blood cell levels
had increased as well as being adversely affected, so that their oxygen carrying
capacity was reduced which could in turn lead to hemolytic anemia or hemolysis.
Whereas those people in the test who had the same foods but cooked by
conventional methods did not show these changes. Basically microwaving foods
can trigger hemolysis because the way microwaves alter the molecule structure
of foods. Who knows what other problems will be found because of the action of
microwaves on food. There are many reports of cancers and other problems from
radiation emitted from cell phones and other electrical devices.
Our son Trevor was put in an observation ward for newborn
babies as soon as he was born, he had a drip shoved in his arm and was given
unspecified drugs. The nurse in charge told me it was because he was overweight
and they normally do this for large babies. She said he had jaundice which was
normal and he would be returned to his mother in the morning, some 18 hours
after he was born. I kicked up merry hell and demanded he was given to his
mother straight away, at 10lbs 6oz he was the same weight I was at birth. After
talking with the head nurse, hospital administration, hospital Doctor and
Trevor's PD Doctor (who I told "I didn't want her services any
more"), Trevor was united with his mother. I later found out that the real
reason Trevor was put in an intensive care ward for new borne babies was
because he had a bad reaction to the substances they gave him at birth. They
did not wait for the results of his screening before administering their
routine round of substances. By the time Trevor was given to his mother he had
also been fed a standard milk formula and would not suckle, causing his mother
to lose her milk supply.
Unfortunately we were unable to find a suitable wet nurse
and any fresh cow’s milk could not be tested for hepatitis and such things (a
problem in 3rd world countries). We found one formula that was low in sugar,
was not fortified with synthetic vitamins and had no soy. This we mixed with
fresh coconut milk, and at 4 months old started him on solids of organic mashed
avocado, mashed banana and free range, pasture fed Organic egg yolks (egg white
can cause irritation and should not be given to babies until at least 12 months
old and they are eating solid or semi-solid foods) gradually weaning him off
the formula. We were very lucky that Trevor did not have serious complications
because of this, I know of other children who have not been so lucky.
